Three arrested, charged with murder in Euclid's Sept. 12 Shirley Avenue shooting

Three people have been arrested and charged with murder in the Sept. 12 shooting on Shirley Avenue that killed 17-year-old Juelyon Bennett — the first arrests in the case — and Euclid police say the investigation remains active.

The arrests came Oct. 2, when Euclid police detectives executed search warrants with support from the EDGE and SEALE SWAT teams, roughly three weeks after the shooting in the 27200 block. The two adults are Andre Williams, 19, of Garfield Heights, and Layvon Reed, 19, of Cleveland; the third is a 17-year-old from Cleveland, identified by cleveland.com as Amilli'yon Norris.

On the evening of Saturday, Sept. 12, Bennett was fatally shot on the residential street, and three others were wounded: a 16-year-old boy, a 17-year-old boy, and a 19-year-old man, all described as Cleveland residents. The first call for help came from East 260th Street and Shoreview Avenue, about half a mile from the scene; a second vehicle carrying two more gunshot victims arrived at Cleveland Clinic Euclid Hospital, and investigators tied both back to Shirley Avenue.

Bennett was a Euclid High School student, and police said several of the people involved were current or former Euclid High School students. In the days after, the district made administrators and counselors available, increased security at the high school, and cooperated with police.

Euclid Police Chief Scott Meyer said then: "This is extremely tragic and this tragedy could have been prevented." Investigators recovered multiple guns and dozens of shell casings at the scene.

Police first called the shooting an isolated incident, but the case soon looked more complicated: some of the people involved had been both victims and suspects, and detectives were waiting on ballistics and DNA results.

What the warrants turned up

Serving the warrants, investigators recovered five firearms. They also recovered ammunition and narcotics — FOX 8's I-Team described the narcotics as a large amount — along with other evidence connected to the homicide. No one was injured during the operation.

Who is in custody

Williams and Reed are being held at the Cuyahoga County Jail; the 17-year-old is at the Cuyahoga County Juvenile Detention Center. Euclid police announced the charges in a news release.

All three are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.

The charges mark a first answer on a block that has waited weeks for one — but they are not the end of the story. What happens next is in the courts: proceedings against Williams, Reed, and the 17-year-old, any additional charges, and what Euclid police release as detectives continue their work.
